About the event
Britt Willoughby’s work explores contrasts. Permanence, impermanence. Perfection, imperfection. Colour, monochrome. Using a unique platinum printing technique, she captures historic breeds of tulips in the Dutch Master style, inviting us to explore their every nuance.
Tulips have always been a symbol of status and love, from the Ottoman Empire to 17th Century Holland where they were traded like stock on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. At the height of ‘Tulip Mania’, some rare tulip bulbs were worth more than houses!
Willoughby has been collecting these historic tulips for years, adding a different variety to her collection every year. She catalogues them depending on breed and how ‘broken’ they are; the imperfections delighting her as much as the perfections. “Their markings, known as feathers and flames, are completely unique and unpredictable and the excitement of seeing them emerge and unfold is tantalising,” enthuses Willoughby.
Combine that with the unique platinum printing method…
